THE Philippines on Monday expressed concern over developments in Venezuela following a United States military operation that led to the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro, warning of the move’s potential implications for regional peace and the rules-based international order.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it recognizes the United States’ stated security considerations but emphasized that all actions must remain consistent with international law, particularly the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

The DFA reiterated key international norms, including the independence and sovereign equality of states, the peaceful settlement of disputes, the prohibition on the threat or use of force, and respect for domestic sovereignty.

It urged all parties involved to uphold international law and avoid further escalation, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of civilians, including Filipinos residing in Venezuela and nearby countries.

Earlier, progressive Filipino lawmakers, activist organizations, and labor groups condemned the US operation, arguing that it violates Venezuela’s sovereignty and could undermine the Philippines’ position in opposing foreign military activities in the West Philippine Sea.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also warned that the operation carries “potentially worrying implications for the region” and may set a dangerous international precedent.
