Retired Supreme Court Justice Adolf Azcuna has spoken out via social media regarding the term “forthwith” in the Constitution’s impeachment provision, stressing its urgency.
Azcuna, who authored Article XI of the Constitution, highlighted that public office is a public trust and that government officials must remain accountable to the people at all times.
He also wrote the procedural section that includes the term “forthwith,” which mandates the Senate to immediately begin trial once the House of Representatives approves an impeachment resolution by at least one-third vote.
Azcuna clarified that “forthwith” translates to “agad-agad” in the official national language, ensuring swift action and preventing unjust delays in impeachment proceedings.
He emphasized that the provision was designed to uphold integrity and expedite impeachment trials, ensuring justice without manipulation or obstruction.
The urgency of the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte has become a heated issue, particularly as Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero insists on prioritizing pending legislative bills before addressing the complaint filed by lawmakers.
