The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) has disbursed P187 million in insurance payouts to 24,987 farmers severely impacted by the Habagat (Southwest Monsoon) and the effects of Typhoons Luis, Maymay, and Neneng.
These crucial payouts cover agricultural damages recorded across eight regions from August 1 to 26, providing vital financial relief to producers.
Rice farmers received the largest portion of the aid, totaling P132.9 million, while high-value crop producers were allocated P42.1 million, and corn farmers received P9.3 million.
This initiative underscores PCIC’s critical role as a government-owned and controlled corporation under the Department of Finance, mandated to protect the livelihoods of Filipino farmers and fisherfolk against natural calamities, pests, and diseases, thereby contributing significantly to national food security and agricultural resilience.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported that overall agricultural damage from various weather disturbances, including the Habagat and the mentioned typhoons, has escalated to P4.13 billion, affecting more than 97,000 farmers and fisherfolk nationwide.
The most significant losses were recorded in palay, amounting to P2.04 billion, followed by high-value crops with P1.37 billion in damages, and fisheries and aquatic resources suffering P412.84 million in losses.
The recurring impact of such severe weather events highlights the Philippines’ extreme vulnerability to climate change, making timely insurance payouts and comprehensive government support essential for farmer recovery and the long-term stability of the nation’s agricultural sector.
