Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, reported that no personnel aboard the PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua were injured after it was intentionally rammed by the China Coast Guard (CCG) 5205 at Escoda Shoal on Saturday.

In a media briefing, Commodore Tarriela stated that the Chinese vessel performed a dangerous maneuver, despite the unprovoked actions of the PCG vessel, which was loitering near Escoda Shoal. This aggressive move attracted the attention of additional CCG and Chinese maritime militia vessels in the area, leading to a significant increase in the number of Chinese vessels surrounding the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

As a result of the collision, the BRP Teresa Magbanua sustained damage to its bridge wing and port bow. At approximately 2:59 PM, the ship’s anchor also fell within Escoda Shoal.

The PCG plans to dispatch a team to assess the damage and ensure the seaworthiness of the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

Meanwhile, Commodore Tarriela noted that this is the fifth maritime incident between Philippine and Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea this August. It is also the first time that the BRP Teresa Magbanua has been targeted by a Chinese vessel since its arrival at Escoda Shoal in April of this year.
