The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has issued a warning about possible lahar flow at Mayon Volcano in Albay province caused by Typhoon Pepito.

Paul Alanis, resident volcanologist at Phivolcs Region V, said in an interview with Bombo Radyo Legazpi that recent eruptions have deposited materials mostly toward the southern sector of the volcano.

Phivolcs is currently monitoring the Miisi, Mabinit, Buyuan, and Basud channels for any signs of lahar flow.

According to Alanis, over 90 million cubic meters of deposits have accumulated from Mayon Volcano’s last eruption, but the risk of these being released depends on the intensity of the rainfall.

He noted that lahar flow could potentially extend all the way to the sea.

Residents were advised to prepare for possible pre-emptive evacuation and to follow hazard maps and local authority recommendations.

Phivolcs has also issued a general advisory about potential lahar flow risks at other monitored volcanoes that could be affected by Typhoon Pepito.
