Tropical Depression Julian Poised to Intensify, May Hit Batanes by Monday

As of 5:00 AM today, September 28, 2024, Tropical Depression “Julian” continues to hold its strength, moving southward over the Philippine Sea.

The center of “Julian” was estimated at 400 km east of Aparri, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. The storm is currently moving at a reduced speed of 10 km/h. Strong winds are extending up to 360 km from its center.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 Raised

Several areas are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1, including:

  • Cagayan (including the Babuyan Islands)
  • Northeastern Isabela (covering towns such as San Pablo, Divilacan, Maconacon, and others)
  • Eastern Apayao (including Luna, Pudtol, and Flora)

Residents in these areas should expect strong winds ranging between 39 to 61 km/h, which may cause minimal to minor damage. Local authorities are advising precautionary measures for public safety.

Rainfall and Wind Forecast

The weather bureau has warned that heavy rainfall may affect parts of Northern and Central Luzon, with localized heavy rain potentially causing flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous areas.

Strong winds are expected to intensify in coastal and elevated areas. Gusty conditions are also predicted in Aurora, Quezon, and the Bicol Region today, extending to more areas, including Metro Manila, by Monday.

Coastal Waters and Sea Conditions

Rough seas (up to 4.0 meters) are forecast along the coasts of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Cagayan, posing danger to small sea vessels. Mariners are strongly advised against setting sail in these areas.

Path and Strength Forecast

Tropical Depression Julian is expected to shift its path in the coming days, possibly making landfall in Batanes by Monday as it intensifies into a typhoon.

There is a potential for further intensification, with a chance of becoming a super typhoon as it approaches Northern Luzon.
