TOL: West Philippine Sea Inclusion in Google Maps a Legacy for Gen Z, Alpha, Beta Generations

West Philippine Sea on Google Maps marks growing international recognition of the Philippines’ maritime rights, Senate Majority Leader Francis ‘TOL’ Tolentino said on Tuesday.

Tolentino, principal author of the newly enacted Philippine Maritime Zones Law (Republic Act 12064), welcomed the inclusion as a symbolic and practical win for the Filipino people.

“Growing global recognition for WPS represents a victory for all Filipinos. It is also an affirmation of the correctness of the Philippines’ current policy to assert its sovereign rights in line with international law and multilateralism,” said Tolentino.

Under the so-called ‘Tolentino Law,’ both the West Philippine Sea and the Talampas ng Pilipinas—formerly known as Benham Rise—were formally defined as critical areas of national interest.

Tolentino emphasized the importance of international support, citing backing from countries like the United States and the European Union.

“Equally significant are the statements of support that the Philippines has been receiving from several nations, including global leaders like the United States and European Union,” he stressed.

He attributed the international attention not only to official diplomatic efforts but also to the strong digital advocacy and patriotism of the Filipino people.

“The world is taking notice because of our unity and collective efforts as a people. And this is despite the aggressive actions of China to drive away Philippine government ships and fishermen from our very own exclusive economic zone,” he pointed out.

Tolentino expressed optimism that the Talampas ng Pilipinas would soon be reflected in Google Maps as well, noting that its official map was received by the International Seabed Authority on March 27, 2025.

“This may change soon,” he said. (“This may change soon,” ani Tolentino.)

He highlighted that the renaming of Benham Rise to Talampas ng Pilipinas was made official through Republic Act 12064.

“This is our legacy for the next generation and beyond. I hope to see in my lifetime the energy resources from WPS and Talampas ng Pilipinas being harnessed by Filipinos for Filipinos, and bringing us on the path to industrialization and prosperity,” Tolentino concluded.
