Several senators have expressed support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive urging Cabinet secretaries to submit courtesy resignations as part of a post-election recalibration of his administration.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero emphasized that the government must be composed of trustworthy and competent partners.
He stressed that reforms should begin within the President’s own circle and even suggested distancing from allies who may be burdensome to governance.
Escudero added that when the government fails, it is the people who suffer the consequences.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada also saw no issue with the President’s move, especially if it is aimed at forming a responsive, accountable, and effective leadership.
Estrada noted that the President is simply exercising his constitutional powers in calling for the resignations.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said the moment should be seen as an opportunity for Cabinet officials to reflect on their performance and prove their capability to lead with swift and competent action.
Senator JV Ejercito believes that President Marcos based his decision on the outcome of the recent midterm elections and that from this point forward, officials must remain alert and ready to act.
Senator Nancy Binay, for her part, expressed hope that services within government departments would not be disrupted and that replacements would be appointed promptly.
Binay also respected the President’s prerogative to request courtesy resignations, noting that Cabinet members ultimately serve at the President’s discretion.
She concluded that agencies should be prepared for leadership changes to ensure that government programs continue without delay.
