Russian Man to Sue Clinic After Wife Becomes Pregnant Despite Vasectomy

A man in Russia is preparing to file a lawsuit against a medical clinic after his wife became pregnant, despite him undergoing a vasectomy. Maxim, a 45-year-old resident of Ufa, made the decision in 2022 to have the procedure done after fathering four children, wanting to ensure that his wife would not become pregnant again.

Maxim visited Promeditsina, a local medical clinic that offers vasectomy services, and agreed to pay 30,000 rubles (approximately $330) for the procedure. The operation was reportedly successful, and Maxim was discharged from the clinic just a few hours later.

However, several months later, Maxim was shocked when his wife informed him that she was pregnant again. In November 2023, the couple welcomed their fifth child.

Seeking an explanation, Maxim contacted the clinic where he had undergone the vasectomy. The clinic advised him to undergo a paternity test and a spermogram to verify his fertility.

The results confirmed that Maxim was still highly fertile. Rather than accepting responsibility, the clinic labeled the situation as a “medical miracle” and even suggested that he should be happy about having another child.

In an attempt to resolve the matter, the clinic offered to refund the cost of the procedure, but Maxim declined the offer.

Maxim and his family are determined to pursue legal action against the clinic, seeking compensation for moral damages and the future expenses of raising their fifth child.

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that serves as a permanent method of male contraception.

During the procedure, the vas deferens, which are the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are cut or sealed, preventing sperm from mixing with semen and thus preventing pregnancy.

Although vasectomies are considered highly effective, they are not infallible. In rare cases, the vas deferens can naturally reattach, or the procedure may fail due to errors during surgery, leading to the possibility of pregnancy.

Before being declared sterile, men are usually advised to undergo a follow-up semen analysis to ensure that the vasectomy was successful.
