The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has deployed a new vessel to patrol Escoda Shoal, replacing the BRP Teresa Magbanua, as confirmed by National Maritime Council Spokesperson Alexander Lopez.
While the specific replacement vessel has not been disclosed, Lopez mentioned that the ship is already en route and nearing the vicinity of Escoda Shoal.
The deployment follows the directive of PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan, who was instructed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to maintain not only a physical but also a strategic presence in the area.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and PCG have implemented various monitoring methods, including technical coverage, to detect any illegal activities in the shoal.
They are also coordinating with allied nations such as Japan and the U.S. in this aspect.
Lopez clarified that the return of BRP Teresa Magbanua to its homeport was for humanitarian reasons, as some crew members required urgent medical attention, and not due to the Philippines relinquishing its rights to the area.
