Tacloban City – Members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Palompon, Leyte, have expressed strong opposition to House Bill 11077 filed by Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez.
The bill proposes dividing Leyte into two provinces—separating Cebuano and Waray-Waray communities—and creating a new province to be called Western Leyte.
Local officials argue that the proposal would lead to increased administrative costs, duplication of government structures, and unclear public benefits.
Leyte 5th District Board Member Atty. Carlo Loreto warned that the division could harm the cultural and geographical unity of the province.
Loreto emphasized that the proposal could impose significant financial burdens on the administration and negatively affect many residents.
He suggested that the proposal undergo thorough study and extensive consultation to ensure it does not adversely impact the majority.
The debate highlights growing concerns about the potential costs and cultural implications of altering Leyte’s provincial structure.
