A Nigerian national wanted in the United States on charges of cyber fraud was arrested by Philippine authorities in Quezon City, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ahmed Kamilu Alex, was apprehended on October 11 on Panay Avenue in Barangay Paligsahan, Quezon City, just a month before being placed on the BI’s blacklist as a fugitive.
According to BI, Alex allegedly posed as an agent of U.S. government agencies, creating websites to process emergency leave requests for victims, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The suspect reportedly collected between $500 and $48,500 per victim through this scheme.
Alex is currently detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City while awaiting deportation proceedings.
The U.S. government has formally requested his deportation to face charges in the United States.
