Morales to Remulla: Probe Villanueva Case Dismissal Now

Former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales has publicly urged current Ombudsman Samuel Martires Remulla to initiate a formal investigation into the dismissal of the graft case against Senator Joel Villanueva.

Morales emphasized that the probe should be based on the official records of the Office of the Ombudsman to ensure transparency and accountability.

The case in question involved alleged irregularities in the use of Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) allocations during Villanueva’s tenure as a party-list representative.

Morales expressed concern over the sudden dismissal of the case, which had previously undergone preliminary investigation and was recommended for filing before the Sandiganbayan.

She stressed that the Ombudsman’s mandate includes upholding integrity in public office and ensuring that no case is dismissed without due process and proper documentation.

The former Ombudsman also noted that the public deserves clarity on why the case was dropped, especially given its implications on anti-corruption efforts.

Calls for transparency have intensified following reports that the dismissal lacked a clear resolution document or explanation accessible to the public.

Morales’ statement adds pressure on the current Ombudsman to revisit the case and disclose the basis for its termination.

The Villanueva case dismissal has reignited debates on prosecutorial independence and the need for institutional safeguards against political influence.
