Actress Liza Soberano has confirmed her breakup with actor Enrique Gil, putting an end to years of speculation among fans.
Liza was recently a guest on Can I Come In?, a six-part series on YouTube hosted by Arab-Australian artist Sarah Bahbah.
The 27-year-old Filipina star revealed that she has not been honest about her relationship with Gil to the public.
“I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up,” Liza admits, “We’ve been broken up for almost three years now.”
She explains that Enrique requested they keep their breakup private.
“The reason, originally why we haven’t said anything about it is because Enrique or Quen asked me not to say anything about it first and I think it, I don’t want to speak for him but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real,” Liza shares.
Liza adds that she agreed to it because she didn’t want it to be real as well, and that her people pleaser side didn’t want fans to not love her anymore.
She also reveals that she was already feeling unhappy a year before the actual breakup.
“I think a year before I actually broke up with him, there were already signs that showing me that I was unhappy but because I had built up this kind of toxic habit of pushing away anything that bothered me because I was afraid of confrontation.”
Soberano admits that she expected them to get married after almost 8 years together. According to her, the breakup was still beautiful because it was full of love.
The actress says that she still loves Quen as a person and thinks of him as a childhood best friend.
She also admits feeling guilty over the breakup because fans longed for their love story to last, but she knew she needed to find herself and grow. Liza also clarifies that Enrique wasn’t to be blamed for the separation.
“He didn’t do anything bad. Nothing bad happened. Our breakup was really good. It was just… we weren’t a match anymore.”
Liza also reveals that she and Quen still communicate, but admits to feeling guilty and selfish over what happened. The actress adds that she knew the breakup was meant to happen for their growth.
“I knew that deep down in my core that something was wrong and I would be doing a disservice not only to me but to him if I didn’t say anything or do anything about it.”
In 2024, Liza pursued a career in Hollywood and starred in the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein.
Liza and Enrique, known as the LizQuen loveteam, began their relationship in 2014 and went public in 2019.
News of the split surfaced in 2022, but both parties neither confirmed nor denied the rumors then. Over the years, the two continued showing support for each other through social media posts.
