MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero stated on Thursday that an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte cannot take place during the Congressional break, citing legal reasons.
The statement came after more than 200 members of the House of Representatives signed an impeachment complaint against Duterte on Wednesday, setting the stage for a Senate trial that could result in her removal from office.
However, the Senate adjourned its plenary session without addressing the impeachment articles.
Escudero explained that the Senate secretariat needs to verify the signatures on the complaint and amend the rules before they can proceed.
Once the revised rules are approved by the Senate, the earliest they could act on the impeachment would be June 2.
“We will not rush this process,” Escudero emphasized.
He added that Duterte will remain in office as Vice President until the Senate decides on the matter.
