According to Barangay Budlaan Captain Nerissa Antolijao in an exclusive interview with Bombo Radyo Cebu Newsteam, Caballes and his friends went hiking toward Mt. Kan-Irag in nearby Barangay Sirao.

While on their way, the group was suddenly stranded as the water level in the stream rose due to heavy rains.

Caballes, who reportedly did not know how to swim, allegedly attempted to cross the stream, leading to his fall and eventual drowning.

The three others were safely rescued through a search and rescue operation led by the Bureau of Fire Protection – Special Rescue Force Central Visayas.

Local police and barangay officials have since issued warnings to hikers, particularly youth groups, to cancel hikes during bad weather, especially in areas with flowing water.
