HEALTH experts are calling on the Philippine government to enhance its surveillance efforts following the discovery of a new bat virus, HKU5-CoV-2, which shares similarities with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Dr. Maricar Limpin, former president of the Philippine College of Physicians, early detection and preventive measures are crucial in protecting the country from potential outbreaks.
“Taking action now will help prevent future health crises and safeguard public safety,” Limpin stressed.
While the newly identified virus has raised concerns, she reassured the public that no human infections have been reported.
Additionally, she noted that HKU5-CoV-2 poses a lower risk of triggering a pandemic compared to COVID-19.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to remain cautious while staying informed.
