The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has declared the entire Philippines to be under a La Niña alert status.
The council has determined that there is a 66% chance of a La Niña event occurring between September, October, and November 2024.
In preparation for the potential impacts of La Niña, member-agencies are now taking steps to mitigate the effects on livelihoods, property, public infrastructure, and other vulnerable sectors.
La Niña is a climate pattern characterized by prolonged periods of rainfall, strong typhoons, monsoon rains, and other abnormal weather conditions.
It is associated with higher-than-normal rainfall levels compared to usual. Additionally, La Niña often brings cooler temperatures and winds.
