MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced a stricter enforcement against drinking alcohol in streets and roadside areas, saying it is now strictly prohibited in public spaces.
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla said street drinking often leads to public disturbances, including street fights and cases of sexual harassment, particularly against women.
He directed the police and local government authorities to arrest individuals who violate the policy, which is being enforced under the Anti-Public Intoxication Act.
Remulla, however, clarified that drinking alcohol inside private homes is not covered by the restriction, as long as it is done in private and not in public areas such as roads, sidewalks, and other open spaces.
FOR CONTEXT
Rules against drinking in public places are generally enforced by local government units (LGUs) under existing public order and safety ordinances.
The national reminder from the DILG comes amid continuing efforts to regulate behavior in public spaces, particularly during nighttime hours and in areas with high youth activity.
