Senator Manuel “Lito” M. Lapid expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, describing him as a towering figure in Philippine politics and a statesman dedicated to public service.

The nation, Lapid said, has lost a remarkable mind and a formidable legislator whose contributions spanned decades and multiple administrations, making him one of the most enduring figures in Philippine history.

Enrile’s public service career included roles across all three branches of government: as Executive Secretary, Minister of National Defense, Member of the House of Representatives, and most notably, as a five-time Senator and Senate President during the 15th Congress.

Among his legislative achievements, Enrile played a key role in the passage of landmark laws such as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (RA 8293), the National Defense Act of 1935, and other measures on national security, economic policy, and governance.

Lapid also recalled Enrile as a mentor during his early years in the Senate, noting that his immense knowledge of law and legislative procedure provided invaluable guidance. He expressed gratitude for the counsel and wisdom Enrile shared, which left a lasting impact on his career.

The senator extended his heartfelt condolences to the Enrile family and prayed for the eternal peace of the late statesman.
