THE September 21 riots that erupted across Manila—including Recto, Taft Avenue, Lawton, and the Santa Cruz Bridge—caused an estimated P10.4 million in damage to both public infrastructure and private property, city officials reported.

The damage assessment was compiled from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Manila City Government, and private citizens whose properties were affected during the unrest.

Initial overnight cleanup operations were described as temporary measures meant to restore order and accessibility.

“Most of it, especially the superficial fixes like repainting, we’ve already addressed,” Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said. He acknowledged, however, that long-term restoration is needed.

Domagoso said he has reached out to private corporations and paint manufacturers to help with rehabilitation efforts, particularly in addressing widespread vandalism.

He also urged private property owners to begin restoring their damaged structures where possible.

Authorities confirmed that 192 individuals have been formally charged in connection with the riots, with cases now pending in court.
