Pope Leo XIV, born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, chose a papal name that echoes historical tradition, yet ushers in a new era for the global Church.
Before his election, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, roles appointed to him by Pope Francis in 2023.
Appearing for the first time on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday, May 9 (Manila time), Pope Leo XIV was met with roaring applause and emotional cheers from thousands of faithful gathered at the Vatican.
