Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan PCG, personally welcomed the crew of BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) after completing their five-month deployment at Sabina Shoal.

Admiral Gavan lauded the team’s efforts in maintaining a strong presence in the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing the importance of their role in safeguarding the country’s maritime territory.

“Rest assured that your Coast Guard will remain calm. We will be professional in pursuing the very clear directive of the President that we should keep what is ours – peacefully,” Gavan said.

BRP Teresa Magbanua is one of the newest and largest vessels in the Philippine Coast Guard fleet, designed for offshore patrol missions, search and rescue, and law enforcement operations.

It has been deployed multiple times to the West Philippine Sea, a region that has been the center of the ongoing maritime dispute between the Philippines and China.

The West Philippine Sea, part of the larger South China Sea, has been a focal point of tensions due to overlapping territorial claims by China and the Philippines.

China’s extensive claims, marked by its so-called “nine-dash line,” have been contested by the Philippines, which has sought international arbitration and support to assert its sovereign rights over the area.

Sabina Shoal, where BRP Teresa Magbanua was stationed, is located within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and has been the site of frequent confrontations between Chinese vessels and the Philippine Coast Guard.

The ongoing efforts of the Philippine government, with the support of the Coast Guard, aim to maintain a peaceful yet firm stance in protecting the nation’s maritime sovereignty.
