FORMER Senator Antonio Trillanes IV believes that the time has come for an impeachment complaint to be filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, particularly in light of her recent controversial remarks.
In an interview at the House of Representatives, Trillanes expressed confidence that an impeachment complaint will soon be filed. “Let’s just wait. I’m not saying I will be the one to file it. I’m saying it will be filed. The time is very ripe for it,” Trillanes said.
A long-time critic of the Duterte family, Trillanes pointed to Duterte’s recent actions as evidence of “red flags” that indicate her “unfitness” for office. He stressed the importance of the Vice President’s role, saying, “Remember, as Vice President, she could be President at any time in cases of emergency.”
He added, “Imagine, with her actions, you’d give her the power of the presidency? Every Filipino should be scared. This person is not in her right mind. That’s why the time is ripe for impeachment.”
When asked whether such a complaint could lead to a conviction in the Senate, Trillanes replied, “Well, we will never know unless we try.”
The controversy surrounding Duterte intensified after an online press conference in which she angrily claimed to have hired someone to kill President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez in the event of her own death. Duterte later clarified that her statement had been “taken out of logical context.”
Additionally, Duterte is currently facing a House panel inquiry regarding alleged questionable budget use in the offices she previously led, including the Department of Education.
However, Manila Representative Joel Chua, who chairs the committee conducting the investigation, stated that House members are not yet discussing the possibility of impeachment.
