A search and rescue operation is currently underway in Russia after a helicopter carrying 22 people, mostly tourists, went missing. The helicopter, a Mi-8T, had 19 tourists and three crew members on board.
According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the helicopter departed from a base near the Vachkazhets volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula, a region renowned for its stunning landscapes and active volcanoes. The helicopter was en route to the volcano when it disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff.
Officials reported that the crew was unable to establish further contact with the helicopter as of 12:15 PM Philippine time.
The search efforts have been hampered by thick fog, making visibility difficult for rescuers. Authorities and volunteers are focusing their efforts on the Bystraya River valley, where the helicopter was expected to fly over.
