MANILA – The National Security Council (NSC) emphasized the urgent need to trace the origin of the submersible drone recovered in Masbate, highlighting its potential national security implications.
“We are thoroughly investigating this because it has national security consequences.
The drone is intended for reconnaissance and surveillance. Therefore, the Philippines must determine where it came from and what it was doing in our waters,” NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said during a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing on Friday.
Malaya clarified that there is no conclusive evidence yet to suggest that the drone came from China.
The submersible drone was discovered by local fishermen in the waters of San Pascual, Masbate on December 30.
It was promptly handed over to the police, who then transferred it to the Philippine Navy the following day.
Malaya stated that the investigation will focus on identifying the drone’s specific features and its potential origin.
Additionally, authorities are examining the vessels monitored in the area.
The NSC is also coordinating with international counterparts to gather further details regarding the recovered drone.
