The National Maritime Council (NMC) emphasized that the Philippines will maintain its strategic presence at Escoda Shoal despite the departure of the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

NMC Spokesperson Vice Admiral Alexander Lopez stated that the country will continue to monitor the area through other means, such as aerial patrols, rather than relying solely on a stationed vessel.

According to Lopez, the key is that the Philippines can monitor, detect, and document activities in the area. He added that this can be achieved using other government assets, not just the BRP Magbanua.

Lopez clarified that the ship’s departure has no connection to the ongoing dialogues between the Philippines and China.

He explained that some of the crew members needed assistance due to the conditions experienced while stationed at Escoda, and the vessel itself required repairs.

The NMC also previously stated that a replacement vessel had already sailed to Escoda Shoal, although the specific ship that will remain there has yet to be named.
