Despite ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), the Philippines and Vietnam continue to maintain peaceful and cooperative relations in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG), located within the 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Philippines.

The Parola Island (occupied by the Philippines) and Pugad Island (occupied by Vietnam) are only two kilometers apart, yet both nations have fostered cooperation through friendly games, cultural exchanges, and idea-sharing activities.

According to Col. Joel Bonavente of Naval Task Force 42, military troops from both countries meet annually, reinforcing diplomatic ties.

While Pugad Island has undergone modernization, the Philippines continues to improve facilities on its occupied islands, including Parola Island.

Upgrades include satellite internet, television access, and sports equipment to boost soldiers’ morale.

This initiative is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) broader strategy to make the islands more livable and habitable for Filipino troops.

Bonavente emphasized that the presence of the Philippine Navy and Marines is crucial in defending the country’s territorial claims amid overlapping disputes in the WPS.

The Philippines and Vietnam have a long-standing partnership in the South China Sea, where both nations face territorial challenges from China.

In 2024, the two countries resumed joint activities on Pugad Island, marking the first bilateral engagement since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Philippine Navy and Vietnam People’s Navy regularly conduct staff-to-staff talks, maritime security discussions, and cultural exchanges to strengthen cooperation.

Additionally, the Philippines and Vietnam signed a maritime cooperation agreement in 2024, aiming to enhance mutual trust and manage conflicts diplomatically.

These efforts underscore both nations’ commitment to regional stability and peaceful coexistence despite external pressures.
