House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez issued a stern warning, affirming that the Philippines is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty in light of escalating Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), even as the country remains committed to peaceful dialogue.
“The Philippines remains committed to dialogue and a peaceful resolution, but we also stand ready to safeguard our sovereignty. We call for respect, and we are determined to meet any challenges that may arise,” Speaker Romualdez declared.
Romualdez’s statement was a direct response to the latest incident involving the China Coast Guard, which intentionally rammed the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) BRP Teresa Magbanua, one of the Philippines’ largest and most modern patrol vessels.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Escoda or Sabina Shoal, located within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone.
This marks the fifth incident this month in the disputed territory.
Romualdez strongly condemned the latest incident, describing it as part of a broader pattern of Chinese aggression.
“With a heavy heart and unwavering resolve, I strongly condemn the recent acts of aggression by the China Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea. The ramming of the BRP Teresa Magbanua, one of our largest and most modern patrol vessels, is a troubling incident that raises serious questions about respect for international law and our nation’s dignity,” Speaker Romualdez stated.
Romualdez also sent a message to the Chinese government, declaring the incident unacceptable and calling for respect for the Philippines’ sovereignty.
“We continue to hope for constructive dialogue, but it is clear that our patience is being tested. We have an obligation, under our Constitution and as a member of the international community, to defend our territory,” Romualdez emphasized.
Romualdez noted that it is time to consider stronger measures to protect the Philippines’ maritime claims, such as enhancing military capabilities, increasing presence in the West Philippine Sea, and expanding alliances with international partners.
He also appealed to the international community to hold China accountable for its aggressive actions.
Romualdez urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to escalate the issue to the highest levels of global diplomacy.
“I urge the Department of Foreign Affairs to bring this matter to the attention of the highest levels of international diplomacy. The global community, including the United Nations, should be made aware of these concerning actions,” Romualdez said.
Finally, Speaker Romualdez called on the Filipino people to support the government’s efforts to protect the country’s territorial integrity.
