The anime and manga world mourns the passing of Nobuyo Oyama, the beloved Japanese voice actress known for bringing to life the iconic character Doraemon.
On Friday, October 11, 2024, Oyama’s family publicly announced her passing, though she had passed away earlier on September 29, 2024, at the age of 90.
According to her talent agency, Actors 7, Oyama died of age-related causes.
Oyama gained worldwide recognition as the voice of the beloved cartoon robot cat Doraemon, a role she voiced for over two decades starting in 1979.
She retired from the role in 2005, leaving behind a legacy as the voice of one of Japan’s most recognizable characters.
Her career as a voice actress began in 1960, with her role in NHK’s puppet show Boo Foo Woo (1960-1967).
Following her debut, Oyama’s career flourished, leading to numerous voice roles throughout the years.
Apart from voicing Doraemon, Oyama was also known for voicing Kappei Jin in the robot anime series Invincible Super Man Zambot 3 (1977-1978) and Monokuma in the video game series Danganronpa (2010-2016).
