NO Filipinos were harmed or affected by the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, as confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to Bombo Radyo Philippines.
The disaster has left over 150 people dead, hundreds injured, and caused widespread devastation.
DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega extended condolences to the victims, expressing their sympathies to our neighbors and friends in Myanmar and Thailand. As of last night, our ambassadors have reported that no Filipinos were among the casualties or those affected.
The earthquake hit northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, causing building collapses, damaged bridges, and cracked roads.
In Bangkok, Thailand, the tremor was strong enough to bring down a 30-story construction site.
Despite the destruction, De Vega assured that the Philippine Embassies in Myanmar and Thailand are closely monitoring the situation.
They have issued advisories urging Filipinos to stay alert, remain calm, and follow updates.
“Our embassies have released advisories for Filipinos to stay vigilant. They are reaching out to Filipino communities through local leaders, and so far, no reports indicate any Filipino casualties or injuries,” De Vega stated.
According to the DFA, there are around 600 Filipinos in Myanmar, but they are located far from the epicenter. The impact was less severe in Thailand, where nearly 29,000 Filipinos reside.
While authorities continue assessing the full extent of the damage, De Vega assured that the DFA is prepared to assist any Filipinos who may seek repatriation due to the disaster.
The Philippine Embassy in Myanmar has committed to gathering accurate information on affected Filipinos and is considering deploying a team for on-the-ground welfare checks.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand has urged Filipinos to stay informed through reliable sources and adhere to safety guidelines.
