THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been tasked with investigating the stabbing incident that occurred on January 2 inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, resulting in one inmate’s death and two others being injured.
This was confirmed by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Friday, January 3.
BuCor Deputy Director Al Perreras stated that he has sent separate letters to NBI Director Jaime Santiago and PNP Chief P/Gen. Rommel F. Marvil, urging them to conduct an investigation to clarify the facts, ensure transparency, and determine accountability regarding the death of the inmate, Ricardo Peralta.
Perreras also instructed NBP Acting Superintendent C/Supt. Roger Boncales to submit a detailed report on the incident and to fully cooperate with the NBI and PNP investigations.
The stabbing occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. on January 2 at Gate 1-A, Quadrant 4, of the NBP’s Maximum Security Camp.
The two other injured prisoners, Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada, were also identified and were treated at Ospital ng Muntinlupa for their stab wounds.
BuCor reported that at least four other persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) believed to be involved in the incident are currently under investigation.
The body of the deceased, Peralta, was claimed the previous evening by his common-law wife, Lalune Gabriel.
