Election watchdog Kontra Daya emphasized that the government’s response to corruption should focus on holding perpetrators accountable, not conducting snap elections.
The statement was made in reaction to Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s proposal to hold snap elections for key government positions—including the President, Vice President, senators, and congressmen—to address the alleged deepening public distrust in the national government.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo Cauayan, Kontra Daya convenor Prof. Danilo Arao said there is no need to complicate the process or devise alternative solutions to restore public trust.
Arao stressed that ongoing investigations into government corruption must continue and yield credible results without shielding lawmakers involved in anomalies.
He warned that some legislators appear to be deliberately complicating the situation to divert attention from those truly accountable.
Arao also reminded the public not to be distracted by political statements, asserting that the real solution lies in prosecuting corrupt officials.
He noted that while an independent commission is investigating the flood control project controversy, its findings are not being publicly disclosed through social media or other platforms, leaving citizens uninformed.
Arao discouraged immediate protest actions, suggesting it is more prudent to await the outcome of current government investigations.
Despite public skepticism, he maintained that the government should be given a chance to resolve corruption issues involving certain lawmakers.
