A man is facing homicide charges after allegedly hacking his daughter’s former boyfriend in the neck in Amulung, Cagayan.
According to PMAJ Jose Cabaddu, chief of Amulung Police Station, authorities responded immediately to a 911 call from Barangay Marabbob, the town’s farthest barangay, regarding the incident.
Upon arrival, police found a 35-year-old man lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Based on initial investigation, the suspect reportedly heard someone attempting to open their windows and doors around 1:00 AM on September 28.
Armed with a bolo, the suspect exited through the kitchen to check who was outside their home.
In a state of panic, the suspect allegedly struck the man in the neck, causing his instant death.
The suspect later surrendered to the barangay tanod.
Cabaddu said the suspect claimed he did not recognize the man and feared he had malicious intent due to the timing of the incident.
Follow-up investigation revealed that the victim was the ex-boyfriend of the suspect’s 30-year-old daughter.
Police learned that the couple had a confrontation at the Iguig Police Station on September 27, where the woman expressed her desire to end the relationship due to frequent arguments.
The victim had previously caused a disturbance at a wake in Santa Barbara, Iguig, where the woman resides.
A written agreement was made between the two to formally separate and for the man to cease bothering the woman.
However, in the early hours of September 28, the man went to the woman’s parents’ house, mistakenly believing she was there, though she was actually in Barangay Anquiray.
The suspect said he did not know the man personally, as his daughter had never introduced him.
