The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is planning to expand the privatization of airports across the Philippines.

The initiative aims to alleviate the workload of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), which currently serves as the operator and regulator for most of the country’s airports.

DOTr Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Roberto Lim announced that next week the agency will finalize an agreement with a private company for the maintenance of Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental.

The project, valued at PHP 12.75 billion, involves a 30-year concession period for the airport’s maintenance and operations.

Airports in Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, and Kalibo are also under consideration for potential public-private partnership agreements.

Out of the country’s 90 airports, including smaller island airports, only five are currently privately operated: Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Clark International Airport, Caticlan Airport, and Laguindingan Airport.
