TACLOBAN City – Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for five of the 15 crew members aboard the cargo vessel MV Jherlyn Khatness, which sank in the waters of Barangay Balicuatro, Lavezares, Northern Samar on December 30.
Ensign Bryhl Amay, acting commander of the Coast Guard Station in Northern Samar, confirmed that the vessel was carrying cement from Naga City, Cebu, and was en route to San Jose, Northern Samar when it encountered rough seas and submerged.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Northern Samar has issued a safety advisory, urging all ships and watercraft passing through the area to take precautionary measures.
“Mariners transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution and report any sightings of the missing crew members or debris to the nearest Coast Guard Station,” the advisory stated.
In addition, rescue operations are also taking place in the waters near Barangay Lipata, Allen, Northern Samar. Ten of the crew members have been rescued and are now under the care of authorities.
The search continues for the remaining five missing crew members.
