A 10-year-old child died tragically on November 17, 2024, one month after being scratched by a dog. Officials suspect rabies as the reason of death, underscoring the essential importance of seeking urgent medical assistance after animal scratches or bites.

Dr. Arnel Florendo, the Tagum City Health Office (CHO) director, confirmed the boy’s death in an interview with a reliable media source.

According to Florendo, the boy only told his parents about what happened while he was hospitalized. However, by then, serious rabies symptoms had developed, such as vomiting, trouble breathing, hydrophobia (fear of water), aerophobia (fear of air), and irritability.

HEALTH EXPERTS WARN AGAINST COMPLACENCY

The CHO has initiated an investigation to identify the dog’s owner. At the same time, health officials have advised the public to take any dog-related injuries, even tiny scrapes, very seriously.

“Immediate action can save lives,” Florendo said, emphasizing the necessity of thoroughly cleaning wounds with soap and running water.

Victims should report incidents to their local Barangay Health Station right away so that they can be referred to an Animal Bite Center or a healthcare center that offers anti-rabies immunizations.

Completing the authorized anti-rabies immunization regimen is critical to preventing rabies from spreading.

COMMUNITY REMINDERS AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Rabies is still a deadly yet avoidable disease. This terrible instance serves as a strong reminder to pet owners to immunize their animals, as well as communities to emphasize safety and rabies prevention education.
