MANILA, Philippines — Authorities came close to arresting controversial businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang last week, but he managed to evade capture and is believed to still be within the country, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) confirmed on Monday.

CLOSE CALL DURING RAID OPERATION
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed that a credible informant personally sighted Ang and relayed his location to authorities, prompting an immediate operation.

Remulla himself joined the raiding team but said they arrived too late to apprehend the fugitive businessman.

“I was personally part of the raiding team. I went there myself, but we didn’t catch him,” Remulla said.

FACING SERIOUS CRIMINAL CHARGES
Ang is currently facing kidnapping with homicide charges linked to the mysterious disappearance of several cockfighting enthusiasts, commonly known as “sabungeros.”

Whistleblower Julie Patidongan earlier alleged that the victims were killed and their bodies disposed of in Taal Lake—claims that have intensified public scrutiny and outrage over the case.

DEFENSE MAINTAIN INNOCENCE
Despite the accusations, Ang’s legal team continues to deny any involvement, insisting that he has no connection to the disappearance and alleged killings of the sabungeros across Metro Manila, Laguna, and Batangas.

THE MISSING SABUNGEROS CASE
The case dates back to 2021–2022, when dozens of cockfighting bettors and agents suddenly went missing under suspicious circumstances. Investigations have since pointed to possible organized operations behind the disappearances, with multiple personalities being linked to the case.

The alleged dumping of bodies in Taal Lake has become one of the most disturbing angles in the investigation, though authorities have yet to fully confirm these claims through physical evidence.

ONGOING MANHUNT
Law enforcement agencies continue to track Ang’s movements, with officials assuring the public that efforts to capture him remain active and intensified.
