President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed confidence that Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial will continue into the 20th Congress.

Marcos stated that even if the trial begins now, it will conclude before new senators take office, at which point they will reassess the proceedings.

Despite this, Marcos emphasized that the Senate holds the responsibility to make the final decision on the matter.

He noted that they are closely monitoring Senate President Francis Escudero’s approach to ensure a smooth transition of discussions into the next Congress.

Escudero was sworn in as the presiding officer of the impeachment court last night.

The Senate also approved a motion by Senator Joel Villanueva for senators to take their oath as senator-judges in the impeachment trial at 4 p.m.

Villanueva stated that once the oath is taken, the court will be constituted, though it will not yet formally convene.

The Senate unanimously voted to refer the verified impeachment complaint against Duterte to the committee on rules.
