The lawyer of fugitive former Bamban Mayor Alice Guo has denied allegations of lying about his client’s whereabouts.
In a statement, Guo’s legal counsel, Atty. Stephen David, clarified that in all his media interviews, he consistently stated that he relied solely on the information provided by his client. In other words, he was merely reiterating Guo’s claim that she was still in the Philippines.
However, Atty. David admitted that he could not confirm this information and had no concrete knowledge of the dismissed mayor’s actual location.
He emphasized that he depends on the representations and disclosures made by his client, trusting the honesty and accuracy of the information given to him to defend and protect his client’s rights.
Atty. David further explained that at the time he made those statements, there were no travel records, such as stamps indicating Guo’s entry into another country, fingerprints, or CCTV footage, which gave him no reason to doubt her claim.
The clarification came after some officials suggested that Atty. David could face charges for his statements.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla previously indicated that they would investigate the possibility of Guo’s legal counsels being involved in her escape from the country.
