PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed optimism about enhancing the Philippines-Japan partnership in defense, security, and economic cooperation.
Marcos shared his sentiments during a meeting with Japan’s National Security Adviser Akiba Takeo at Malacañang on Thursday, Dec. 19.
The President emphasized the robust relationship between the two nations, stating, “I’m very optimistic about the continuing strengthening of our partnership not only in terms of defense and security but also in the economic [area].”
He added that this collaboration has bolstered the Philippines’ position in addressing various regional challenges.
Marcos highlighted the two countries’ strong cooperation in defense, particularly through joint sharing, interoperability, and exercises, which reinforce their stance in the South China Sea.
He also underscored the recent ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) on Dec. 16 by the Philippine Senate, saying, “As soon as we are all ready, we can operationalize the agreement that we have established between Japan and the Philippines.”
Signed in July 2024, the RAA aims to improve interoperability between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.
The agreement facilitates broader military cooperation, exercises, and enhanced security measures, marking Japan’s first defense pact in Asia.
In a message delivered by Japan’s National Security Adviser, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru praised the growing bilateral cooperation between Japan and the Philippines, referencing key developments such as the Japan-Philippines-US Summit Meeting in April, the Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting in July, and the RAA ratification.
The Japanese Prime Minister emphasized the shared commitment of Japan, the Philippines, and the US as maritime nations connected by the Pacific Ocean.
He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and strengthening collaboration in maritime security, economic security, and regional connectivity to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
