Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Overcomes Challenges to Wrap Production, Set for Release this Year

More than two decades after Lilo & Stitch charmed audiences, Disney’s beloved animated classic is making a comeback as a live-action/CG hybrid. Initially announced in October 2018, the project faced numerous delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, but finally wrapped production earlier this year.

The journey to bring this Hawaii-centric tale back to life has been anything but smooth. The first script, penned by Mike Van Waes, underwent significant revisions by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright before filming commenced. Jon M. Chu was originally slated to direct, but scheduling conflicts led to Dean Fleischer Camp taking the helm.

Production began to gain momentum in July 2022 but was soon disrupted by a fire on set, which prompted an arson investigation. After resuming in April 2023, casting announcements brought further delays. The production was halted in May 2023 due to the writers’ strike, followed by the actors’ strike a few months later.

The film also faced controversy when Sydney Elizabeth Agudong was cast as Nani, Lilo’s sister, with some accusing the filmmakers of colorism due to her lighter skin tone compared to the animated version of the character. Additionally, the original actor cast as David Kawena, Kahiau Machado, was replaced by Kaipot Dudoit after Machado’s past use of racial slurs surfaced online.

Despite these challenges, the live-action Lilo & Stitch has successfully completed filming and is slated for release on Disney+ later this year. As fans eagerly await its debut, it’s time to dust off those Elvis Presley records and get ready for the return of this heartwarming story.
