VP Sara Duterte Asserts the Need to Defend the Country’s Sovereignty

Vice President Sara Duterte emphasized that issues surrounding the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and the geopolitical tensions with China should be addressed in accordance with the nation’s constitution. She underscored the importance of protecting the country’s freedom and sovereignty.

VP Duterte further stressed that the Philippines must maintain good relations with its neighboring countries while ensuring national security, territorial integrity, and the interests of its citizens.

She reiterated that the West Philippine Sea is rightfully part of the Philippines, as affirmed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The Vice President also highlighted that bilateral talks between nations should not only focus on territorial disputes but also discuss considerations and interests that could contribute to the country’s growth.

In a related note, VP Duterte expressed her appreciation for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for their continued efforts in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty amid the challenges in the WPS.
