According to Police Regional Office 10 spokesperson Major Joann Navarro, initial investigations revealed that the pick-up attempted to overtake another vehicle en route to Cagayan de Oro, colliding with the oncoming truck carrying a container van.

The impact of the collision killed the underage pick-up driver and one other passenger on the spot, while the remaining three victims were rushed to separate hospitals in the city.

Truck driver Ernie Apor stated in an interview that he saw the approaching pick-up from a distance but could not avoid it due to the heavy weight and large size of his vehicle.

Despite being the one struck, Apor remains in custody as the law mandates due to the fatalities and injuries involved.
