Toxic watchdog BAN Toxics has warned consumers to avoid buying kiddie plastic slippers sold online after detecting harmful levels of lead, a toxicant linked to brain damage.
The group tested popular kiddie slippers marketed for 1-3-year-olds, priced between Php 45-55 on Shopee, using a Vanta C XRF Chemical Analyzer.
Results revealed lead levels ranging from 393 ppm to 4,300 ppm, far exceeding safety thresholds. Additionally, chlorine content above 100,000 ppm suggests the material is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a potentially hazardous plastic.
Thony Dizon, Advocacy and Campaign Officer for BAN Toxics, urged consumers to be cautious, stating that children’s products must be tested for toxic chemicals to ensure safety.
“Toxic chemicals like lead threaten children’s brain development and immune systems. The government and online platforms must tighten regulations to prevent unregistered children’s products from reaching the market,” Dizon said.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has noted that children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, which can occur through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact with contaminated objects.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has implemented a Chemical Control Order to regulate the use of lead and lead compounds, but enforcement challenges remain.
BAN Toxics also raised concerns over the presence of phthalates, plasticizers in PVC linked to hormonal disruptions and potential cancer risks.
To mitigate risks, the group advises consumers to check product labels, buy from reputable stores, and opt for rubber slippers. They also recommend verifying product safety through the FDA portal.
