The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival has empowered and celebrated the innovators and disruptors of local cinema since it was founded in 2005.

As it celebrates its 20th year anniversary, the annual event continues to uphold its mission with entries that saw a more critical, relevant, adaptive, and inclusive side of Philippine filmmaking.

Sony Philippines, renowned for collaborating with different artists from the movie industry, celebrated this milestone with a stronger and more collaborative partnership with Cinemalaya 2024, held on August 2 to 11.

Cinema has always been a significant component of Sony’s ethos, which has revolved around the concept of KANDO, a Japanese word that roughly translates to “emotion.” In the world of visual arts, few platforms can explore the power of emotions deeper than cinema.

Cinemalaya 2024 saw new and veteran faces of Philippine movies expound on their narratives through different lenses. Refreshingly, the festival also got to witness rarely explored topics and languages that came alive in the ten-day event.

With the theme, “Loob, Lalim, Lakas,” Cinemalaya 2024 featured 10 full-length films and 10 short films. The awards ceremony, held on August 11, lauded 20 winners by the end of the night. Sony Philippines, the sole Platinum sponsor at the event, gave two Cinema Line Camera FX6, worth PHP 362,000 each, to the Best Director winners, Jaime Pacena II for Kono Basho (Full-length Film category) and Sam Manacsa for Cross My Heart and Hope To Die (Short Film category).

The Cinema Line Camera FX6 was also a major leap from last year’s prize, which was the FX3 Cinema Line Full-frame.

Kentaro Imamura, marketing director of Sony Philippines, says, “We wholly understand and embrace the impact of films on humanity, and how they can allow us to examine ourselves through these thoughtful stories and images.”

For years, Sony’s intelligent technology has made it easier for artists behind the scenes to capture these images and share them with audiences, as they are meant to be seen.
