Senate Vows Accountability for Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge Collapse in Isabela

The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee has assured accountability for those responsible for the collapse of the controversial Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge in Isabela, a project worth over P1.2 billion.

The bridge, completed on February 1, 2025, collapsed on February 27 after a truck carrying an estimated 102 tons of rocks, far exceeding the 45-ton weight limit, crossed it.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Iloilo, Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, who was visiting Iloilo City, said he questioned the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) over ongoing retrofitting works and why the agency covered the expenses without enforcing the contractor’s warranty provision.

He emphasized that the total project cost reached P1.192 billion, with a significant portion spent on retrofitting in May 2023 and May 2024.

The DPWH has formed a special committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, with findings expected to be released on April 25.

As a temporary solution, motorists are advised to use alternate routes while the bridge remains closed.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the quality of infrastructure projects and accountability in public works.

The public is now calling for stricter oversight and adherence to construction standards to ensure safety and proper use of government funds.
