Retired Soldier Kills Son in Shooting

CAMP JUAN, Ilocos Norte – A heated altercation between a father and son in Barangay San Guillermo, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, ended in tragedy on Friday morning, December 3, when a retired soldier allegedly shot and killed his 25-year-old son.

San Nicolas Police Chief, Police Capt. Randy Damo, identified the victim as Jovanie Fer Cabbat.

Initial investigations revealed that Jovanie confronted his father, Fermin Cabbat Jr., 58, after discovering him burning his mother’s belongings inside their home.

Jovanie reportedly punched his father in an attempt to stop him.

The incident escalated when Fermin, enraged, retrieved a firearm from his room and shot his son.

Jovanie sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Authorities arrested Fermin at the scene and recovered five spent caliber 5.56 shells, two magazine assemblies for caliber 5.56, and two magazine assemblies for caliber 7.62.

However, the firearm used in the incident remains missing, and police are actively searching for it.

Fermin is now in custody and facing charges related to the incident.
