The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has officially opened applications and nominations for the next Supreme Court Chief Justice, initiating a critical process for the nation’s highest judicial post.

This announcement follows the impending compulsory retirement of incumbent Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on November 6, marking the end of his tenure.

The JBC has set October 13 as the deadline for submitting applications, along with all necessary documentary requirements, ensuring a structured and timely selection process.

As a constitutional body, the JBC plays a pivotal role in the Philippine justice system, responsible for vetting nominees and submitting a shortlist to the President for vacant positions in the judiciary, the Office of the Ombudsman, and members of the Legal Education Board, thereby aiming to ensure merit-based appointments.

Chief Justice Gesmundo, who was appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte in April 2021, is the 27th Chief Justice of the Philippines and was the fourth Associate Justice appointed by Duterte to eventually lead the high court; his relatively short tenure saw the Supreme Court tackle significant issues such as the Anti-Terrorism Act and the implementation of the Mandanas-Garcia ruling, alongside efforts to digitalize court processes.
