President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed into law the Republic Act 12080, also known as the “Basic Education Mental Health and Well-being Promotion Act,” on December 9.
The legislation, authored by Senator Lito Lapid, mandates comprehensive mental health programs in public and private basic education institutions across the Philippines.
Senator Lapid emphasized the growing impact of traditional and social media on the emotional and mental well-being of Filipino youth.
The law aims to address these challenges by integrating mental health professionals and promoting mental health initiatives in the educational system.
Lapid stressed the importance of early intervention, noting that unresolved mental health issues in childhood could worsen as students grow older.
He described the law as an investment in the nation’s future, prioritizing the welfare of students, teachers, and mental health professionals.
“This law is a gift to our educators, students, and professionals. It is a vital step toward ensuring mental health care in our schools,” Lapid stated.
The initiative will establish programs focusing on mental health promotion, protection, and support for Filipino students and educators nationwide.
The law reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment that prioritizes mental well-being.
